Infor, a provider of business applications specialized by industry and built for the cloud, recently announced that Lineage Logistics has successfully implemented Infor Supply Chain Execution (SCE) version 10.3 in a cloud-hosted environment. Lineage, one of the largest temperature-controlled warehousing and logistics companies in the world, sought to improve process efficiencies while consolidating Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). To help improve enterprise-wide processes, the organization is undertaking a consolidation initiative with the goal of making each warehouse activity more efficient. Lineage selected Infor as one of their strategic partners for this initiative to help minimize disruptions and delays that could impact Lineage customers. In choosing and implementing Infor SCE in the cloud, Lineage gains a highly scalable solution that combines enhanced warehouse management functionality, labor management, and 3PL billing and transportation execution in a single, unified cloud-enabled solution.

R. Hamilton & Co. Launches Modern And Personalized ERP With Infor

Electrical accessories manufacturer, R. Hamilton & Co., recently announced that they have deployed Infor CloudSuite Industrial (SyteLine) for improved data handling and business intelligence.

The new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application will support two locations in the United Kingdom, and help improve decision-making and reduce business continuity risks.

With a previous system that was over 20 years old and heavily customized, Hamilton maintenance and support was managed in-house and was reliant on a limited number of personnel, exposing the company to risk. This bottleneck also restricted the flow of information around the business and limited opportunities to implement changes to the business in a fast, effective manner.

Following a thorough review of the market, Infor CloudSuite Industrial was chosen on the basis of better functionality and the ease with which screens, data and reports could be personalized. Before going live with the new system, Hamilton performed essential personalization to ensure that the business could take customer orders (at an average of 1,300 lines per day), produce job documentation for shop floor, process the shipping of orders, purchase stock, invoice customers and pay vendors.

To read more about the Hamilton implementation, and review additional Infor business case studies, visit the Infor Customer Newsroom.

Why the Cloud Won’t Save Your Business

All of the hype and hoopla that has surrounded cloud computing is finally quieting down. We’re almost in the place where cloud computing is no longer being suggested as the miracle cure for what ails business. Cloud Solutions: Focus on Flexibility First

Listening to multiple presentations from a variety of vendors with cloud-based solutions, you would get the impression that the greatest benefit of the cloud is cost savings. That’s certainly the way most marketing pitches for the cloud seem to lean. While it is true that entry costs for a subscription-based service will almost always be lower than the entry costs for a service or product that is purchased outright, the math begins to favor the capital expenditure after the 5 or 6 year mark. This situation is quite similar to the cost differential between purchasing a home or automobile outright vs the long-term costs of financing these same items over a longer period of time. Ultimately, you pay for convenience, and the cloud offers a special brand of convenience.

The key is for an organization to determine if the benefits which are derived from this convenience, outweigh the raw costs that might be greater over the long haul. It is no wonder that very few vendors will ever suggest that the long-term costs of any particular cloud computing service are automatically lower than the alternatives. No, what the cloud provides is low entry costs plus increased business and technology flexibility.

Cloud Computing: Paradise or Peril

From the Association for High Technology Distribution:

Many distributors ask, "should we be moving our technology to the cloud?" Some of the reasons that this question is being asked is based on the following factors listed below. Do any of these apply to your business?

  • We just had a server failure and we lost a ton of data
  • We are trying to reduce our expenses and we heard that the cloud was cheaper that what we are doing today
  • Maintaining our current hardware is expensive and it is not what we want to be focusing our time and dollars on
  • Technology is changing so fast, we just never seem to be able to keep up.
Let's start by explaining some of the terms you may have heard...
