AMCO Proteins Improves Business Performance With Deacom

AMCO Proteins, a specialty proteins manufacturer, was using technology to run their business much like other manufacturing companies in the United States: by customizing various types of software to deliver specific capabilities within their ERP system. While the company was able to ‘get by', gaps in their process were becoming more prominent as the complexity of the business developed.

“Between the management of different modules for ERP, CRM, and maintenance, and manually inputting data, our processes were beginning to cause disruption to our business." said Adam Cabot, CEO of AMCO Proteins.

AMCO realized that in order to grow both strategically and organically, they needed to find an ERP solution that would eliminate a reliance on multiple systems and provide the flexibility to support future business acquisitions. Upon evaluation, the team unanimously agreed that Deacom’s all-encompassing ERP system would answer all of their critical business needs.

“We knew the DEACOM system would be faster, more efficient, and the updates weren’t going to negatively impact business continuity,” said Cabot.

Deacom and AMCO identified opportunities to strengthen operations through process control. The most significant enhancement was to deliver heightened flexibility within production scheduling. AMCO regularly runs production jobs lasting multiple days. Therefore, the teams realized significant value in creating a flexible production scheduler. Within this tool, AMCO can create full production jobs and move them around a “test calendar” to determine the most efficient process and without ever impacting the live schedule. Once the user is secure in their decision, the production job can be moved to the main schedule to be applied immediately.

Since being live on DEACOM, AMCO has already seen significant value with improved visibility into business performance. Previously, the company relied on spreadsheets and handwritten notes of production runs, downtime, uptime, and yields. This information was then manually entered into spreadsheets to create graphs and PowerPoint presentations – a time-consuming and unsustainable method.

Said Cabot, “Now we have real-time data right at our fingertips. We can instantly see what is being produced in shifts A, B, and C, and drill down into those details to identify inconsistencies and opportunities for improvement. The real-time information allows us to make faster and better decisions."

Zeidler Floral Increases Profits With Floral Smart System

Zeidler Floral in Indiana has been using Floral Computer Systems Smart System for a little over two years. Here is what Blake Mobley, President of Zeidler had to say about the implementation decision:

"First off, the entire implementation process was very professional, well organized, and paced properly. It was your thoroughness throughout and high level of communication that always gave me the confidence we could transition into better operators by using the tools of the Smart System. Everyone caught on very easily and we never missed a beat going live a few weeks before Valentine’s Day. It was clearly evident that future success was in our cards if we continued our use and learn the system.

"Now, two years later and over several holidays, I can say with factual proof, that the Smart System is helping us to be more profitable. The main reason, amongst many, has been the easy accessibility to answers of what we have and what we need for when. "The guesswork is mostly gone and our turns and margins are better than ever. By using the system we know right away if pricing is out of line and have a pulse of our margins at all times. There is no longer the waiting for monthly financials to know where we stand and that in itself had given my managers and I the answers we need to make changes in real-time and not weeks later.

"Thank you for giving us the tools and support to be better in serving our customers and being a more efficient and profitable business. I wish every investment in technology gave us the ROI as the Smart System and look forward to many more years of working together."

ISCO Industries Keeps Pipeline Full With MITS

ISCO Industries is one of the largest suppliers of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipe and related services in the United States. Founded in 1962 in Louisville, Kentucky, ISCO has more than 350 employees and operates 28 facilities in the United States, Canada and Australia.

ISCO has stringent security requirements that any technology solution it implements needs to meet. Usability and a short learning curve were also critical. When searching for a business intelligence solution to support the required queries and reports, MITS Discover Business Intelligence solution rose to the top.

The MITS security capabilities let each sales rep quickly see the information they need to see, while protecting sensitive data from unauthorized eyes. The company also purchased the MitsMaker design tool and attended MITS hosted training with the intention of designing some of its own hypercubes going forward.

Since the implementation, ISCO reports that one of the most positive outcomes from MITS Discover has been speed and the ease of learning. The sales force can very quickly get all the information they need to do their job. ISCO’s MITS Discover implementation will continue to expand as they learn to create their own hypercubes using MitsMaker. The company also acquired a license for the MITS Report operational reporting solution, and has begun studying related data requirements.

Billows Electric Supply Enhances Business Intelligence With Phocas

Billows Electric Supply (Billows) is a family-owned business founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1950. Since that time, the company has grown to more than 250 employees operating 19 locations throughout the Delaware Valley. Billows provides the full spectrum of residential and commercial electrical needs, switchgear and lighting.

Over the years, Billows has used several solutions for data analytics, but the most important factors to the company were ease of implementation and use. In the past, Billows had to build silos of information for other analytics software packages, and their complexity meant only a few trained people could and would use them. When Billows was introduced to Phocas, it was clear that it would be easy to gather information and make it accessible to different employees. Phocas provides a simple, accessible solution that makes business intelligence available to everyone in the organization, including non-technical users.

David Lowenstein, vendor relations at Billows, added, “What was important about Phocas was that people could just use the product. They could create their own reports or use pre-fab reports. Phocas made data analytics and reporting accessible to more people throughout the company."

Phocas is now used across Billows for a variety of applications. The sales team sets up reports that are emailed to them on a regular basis. They can track their sales, as well as dig further into transaction details to identify challenges and opportunities. Lowenstein and the vendor relations team create custom reports and dashboards that are used for vendor negotiations. Rather than printing off a variety of reports for vendor meetings, they pull up Phocas’ online dashboards to show customers their transaction history with Billows, which helps when negotiating future product pricing. The executives are also taking advantage of Phocas’ dashboards, which allow them to see from a high level what is going on with sales and inventory across the business. They click on an emailed report link, log into Phocas and can quickly review the top-level numbers, drilling into the data to get more details about customers, inventory and transactions.

Lowenstein concluded, “You can do more with Phocas than you can even imagine and you can now get business intelligence into the hands of people across the organization who don’t have access to data today.”

SPA Outlines How Pricing Agreements Drain Profits

Distributors must carefully and proactively manage Special Pricing Agreements (SPAs) to prevent margin erosion. Unfortunately, faced with the complexity of managing thousands of line items, all with different expiration dates, terms and pricing structures, many distributors have allowed their contracts to run on autopilot, resulting in significant value erosion.

This is exacerbated by three common scenarios:
1. Vendor pricing inevitably changes over time, usually increasing distributors’ cost to serve. The problem with keeping SPA agreements the same year after year is that the variables that made them profitable initially – such as volume and vendor pricing – tend to change over time.

2. Sales reps, who lack the time to carefully review existing SPA agreements (and who don't want to rock the boat), request extensions at the last minute. Unless they are equipped with a contract management solution, distributors have no good way to handle these last-minute requests leaving little time to determine which contract extensions are truly warranted as-is and which leave pricing below market.

3. In the absence of data, emotions drive pricing and customer negotiations. Many distributors can’t easily see whether a contract is under-performing. When the fear of losing a customer isn't balanced against the data, even the most lopsided SPA agreements are renewed.
SPA's Contract Management Solution (CMS) has simple options from highly granular and flexible to sweeping and efficient for searching, summarizing and modifying what’s always been a hornet’s nest of data. Distributors can eliminate unprofitable contract scenarios and quickly and efficiently update contract pricing for low-volume and low-sensitivity items, maximizing profits while minimizing customer push-back. SPA provides the analytical tools and online training to drive continuous improvements in adoption and thus profit improvement.

Rowleys Wholesale Gains Efficiencies With Tour de Force

Rowleys Wholesale is a distributor of automotive and industrial lubricants, tires, equipment, and a variety of other products related to the automotive industry. Rowleys selected Tour de Force to provide customer relationship management (CRM), sales force automation (SFA), and business intelligence (BI).

The Rowleys Wholesale team responsible for selecting a CRM system unanimously agreed that Tour de Force was the best solution for them. The primary reasons that Rowleys Wholesale selected Tour de Force were the extensive integration to their Infor SX.enterprise ERP system, extensive integration with Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Exchange Server, the full range of features offered through the mobile solution, and Tour de Force’s extensive background and experience in the distribution industry.

“After reviewing a wide range of CRM solutions, it was clear to everyone involved that Tour de Force was the best fit for Rowleys Wholesale,” remarked Mike Rowley, co-owner and CIO. “Once we saw a demo, we were amazed at the extensive out of the box integration they provided to Infor SX.enterprise, without the need for expensive customizations or add-on middleware."

Other features of the system, such as the flexible permission structure, easy to navigate Manager’s Console, powerful Gap Analysis, and use of user defined fields contributed to Rowleys decision.

To read more about the Rowleys integration and learn about the features provided by Tour de Force, visit their online Case Studies.

Craven Foods Sees Clearly With Phocas BI

Craven Foods is an independent food wholesaler and distributor based in Bunbury WA. The company established operations in 1987 and has since grown rapidly and now carries over 3,500 lines of stock.

Craven services the entire south west region of WA, providing products and services to restaurants, cafes, roadhouses, convenience stores, hotels, schools and more. The increasing complexity in the sales and management of multiple product lines has led to the need for a fast and efficient reporting solution. To keep track of sales and gain a better understanding of his business, Doug Mateljan, Managing Director for Craven Foods, introduced Phocas Business Intelligence Software into the company.

Says Mateljan, “We are now able to make decisions based on fact rather than intuition. We can drill down through the information to whatever we want and cross reference sales to customer, stock or sales rep. This is very valuable in terms of identifying opportunities or missed sales”.

Increasing Revenue and Profit

Phocas BI has given Craven Foods the opportunity to drive more business through their sales people. The sales team are more accountable now because individual performance as well as the team’s overall performance is highly visible. Phocas also allows the sales team to find more leads and opportunities to upsell and cross-sell, ensuring everyone at Craven benefits.

Zeller Corporation Uses Phocas For Smarter Decision Making

Zeller Corporation provides engineering solutions to global customers. Zeller’s legacy system was sufficient, but had flaws: a report generation process that, although complex, processed all data in the same way and delivered two dimensional and time-delayed outputs.

Zeller’s IT Manager Janet Martinez says, “Phocas changed the game. Once we saw its capabilities and competitive pricing structure, we knew that Phocas offered the functionality, flexibility and business insight we were looking for. Critically, the depth of business intelligence was matched by simplicity of use.”

Training needs were minimal. Zeller employees were able to operate the system from the moment it went live. “Our CEO has been using it since day one,” says Martinez. “It allows him to slice and dice the numbers in ways that are meaningful to our business, and gives a multi-faceted overview of what’s happening internally, and how we are meeting our customers’ needs.”

Before Phocas, Martinez was the only member of the Zeller team able to query the business data, forcing her to produce 13 reports every month. This represented a major time investment and delivered static, snapshot, data with no analytical capabilities. Today, 20 members of the Zeller team, including branch managers, sales staff and senior management, access the company’s data in real time, with the ability to drill down and transform it into information that helps to drive productivity and profitability.

Ongoing support from the Phocas team is uncovering new potential for Zeller. “Phocas is already proving itself a priceless business asset, but the more we use it, the more ways we find to use it,” adds Martinez. “With sales and forecasting now in place, we are looking to add open orders and inventory data so we can bring the same level of visibility to these areas. We are also looking to open it up to more users, bringing the power of real time information to our sales teams on the road. Whatever we need, the Phocas team makes it happen. The sky’s the limit.”

To read more and learn about how Phocas can help your business, visit the Case Studies section of the Phocas website.

MA Ford Gets Cutting-Edge Quality & Services With Phocas

MA Ford, headquartered in Davenport, Iowa manufactures high quality precision cutting tools and employs over 300 globally.

MA Ford needed a reporting tool that gave them insight into their sales figures as well as a better understanding of their customer base of over 900 distributors across the globe, selling their products to a variety of industries.

Prior to implementing Phocas, MA Ford generated reports from their Global Shop ERP system. As well as consuming IT resources, it could take up to 40 days from a Sales Manager requesting a report to when they received it. By the time the report was delivered, it was already out of date.

Impressed with the speed of Phocas and the ease of generating reports, MA Ford decided to implement Phocas business intelligence software to run their sales reporting. Rather than static reports that would come from a standard system, Phocas allows their data comes to life and gives them a clear picture of what’s happening in the business. MA Ford believes that over time and as they understand the product better, Phocas will deliver even greater benefits to their business.

At present Phocas is used primarily for sales data and analysis. In the future, MA Ford plans to extend the product to other areas of the business including inventory as well financial data.

To learn more about the role Phocas can have in your business, visit the Phocas Newsrom.
