Future Supply Chains Increases Efficiency With Infor

Established in April 2007, Future Supply Chains Solutions Ltd is India's first fully integrated end-to-end supply chain services company. Future Supply Chains had warehouses spread across the country with very little infrastructure. As this range of warehouses operated on a labor-intensive and manpower dependent model, Future Supply Chains found it extremely difficult to keep track of inventory while also managing additional storage. With an ever-increasing number of SKUs and volumes, the company needed a state-of-the-art Warehouse Management System (WMS).

The volume of retail business handled by Future had increased threefold when compared to the volumes handled a few years back, and as result of this growth, they were facing the challenge of handling a large number of SKUs, spread across many different product categories including fashion, home, food, and furniture and consumer durables.

The company created a team to do the ground work in terms of business logic and strategy and at the same time it started analyzing the best of breed WMS products available in the market that catered to its needs. "We liked Infor as it had better architectural concepts that made it more scalable and reliable," says Samson Samuel, COO and CIO, Future Supply Chains. "However, we selected it not only due to the features and functionalities of the product, but also because Infor had an ecosystem of existing partners and a strong presence across India in terms of manpower, offices, and clients. Infor was associated with us right from the start of our quest for a WMS. All this, coupled with Infor's willingness to provide support, clinched the deal for them. In fact, we rated Infor 5 out of 5 on our requirements."

Seeing results
The benefits of the Infor WMS implementation are now visible across the organization. “A pull system based on actual demand has now replaced a push system that ran on forecasted demand. Shelf management has improved tremendously. In fact, the overall way in which the business and operations now work has improved drastically,” describes Singh.

The Infor WMS has also helped the company rationalize its warehouse structure design decisions. The company is now able to handle a very large number of SKUs and ensure 100% stock accuracy as the stock is totally visible online. It is also possible to do stock corrections in real time since all entries are online. Through Infor WMS, Future Supply Chains can now track and measure what each person is doing or contributing. The Infor WMS solution ensures the company has access to accurate stock measurements, visibility of stocks across the DCs, and tail stock clearance. The shrinkages have gone down. Stock replacement and refill rates have reached an efficiency level of more than 90%.

For Future Supply Chains, it is difficult to visualize operating its warehouse business without Infor’s WMS systems. Due to extensive tracking and measurement capabilities, the company is aware at all times as to what is happening with each SKU in the warehouse. “The Infor WMS is a perfectly running system today. The implementations are now working at 99% efficiency. Some DCs are even working at 100%. It has helped establish a system-based, technology-based, and process-based model of business. It ensures minimum or no shrinkage, high accuracy, very low time and optimum cost to market, security, and on-time distribution to the customer.” concludes Singh.

Impact Products Boosts Warehouse Potential With Interlink

Impact Products, LLC, based in Toledo, Ohio, is an international marketer of branded and private-label non-chemical commercial cleaning, maintenance and safety products. Impact's products includes a full line of microfiber, cleaning/dusting/mopping equipment, receptacles, washroom, dispensing, material handling, gloves, and safety products. Impact utilizes multiple channels of distribution to reach the end user in the sanitary maintenance, food service, safety and industrial markets.

Impact's distribution facility operated in a paper driven environment. Warehouse transactions were not real-time, labor intensive, prone to error and inhibited multi-shift operations. Impact decided improving and automating the warehouse processes with a Warehouse Management System (WMS) would allow for continued growth in the existing facility. Interlink's software, Warehouse-LINK®, offered Impact a warehouse operations solution through the use of desktop applications and Radio Frequency (RF) devices.

Interlink also developed an order planning function, which enables the user to quickly organize order information in a user customized format. This process affords the user the ability to plan over a future time horizon, direct pick location replenishment and release order processing by individual pick modules - all at the click of a mouse.

The most immediate improvement Impact experienced was the real time processing of transactions within Warehouse-LINK®. The visibility to the entire operation by the management staff has significantly reduced decision making time. The management team is now in more control of the order process and shipping. The shipping team can now see all order details and status of each item throughout the picking process. The ability to seamlessly transition to a multiple shift operation is another significant key feature. Warehouse-LINK® software has eliminated non-value added activities from the legacy system. This resulted in a 17% reduction in warehouse labor. Recent order processing volumes have increased 13% over the same period in the previous year. Said Brian Paul, Vice President of Operations at Impact Products, "Our partnership with Interlink has enabled growth and efficiency that we would not have otherwise been able to accomplish."

A-H Distributors Implements Mincron Warehouse Solution

A-H Distributors implemented the Mincron warehouse management solution at their new 150,000-square-foot Distribution Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey in under three months. A-H Distributors holds about 7,000 SKUs of plumbing, heating, electrical, PVF, drainage and specialty products in its inventory. Project Manager Rene Jones described the process as “very simple” and added that the staff got confident with using it during their preliminary training sessions.

Mincron, a KCS Group company, provides innovative business management solutions that are flexible, scalable and fully integrated. Mincron offers both the SmartDistributor and K8 software solutions, which can be hosted on premise or in the cloud. The Mincron StockSmart Warehouse Management System allows distributors to maintain a 99.9% inventory accuracy level while increasing the speed with which staff can receive, pick and ship product. Mincron’s warehouse solution is designed to be comprehensive and highly flexible. It works equally well with small branch warehouses and massive distribution centers like A-H. And it effectively drives the processes of strictly structured environments as well as it does for those that are rapidly changing and unpredictable.

"In a typical warehouse environment with forklifts, drivers are always on the lookout for the aisle and shelf they need,” noted Jones. “They also have to stop, turn and raise the forklift each time they handle a product. All of that adds more time to the process. A wire guidance system in the floor that is tied into the A-H warehouse management solution runs the turret at the new DC. Product is scanned as it is received, and then the system does the rest until it is in their customers’ hands. When the driver locks an order into the system, a wire literally guides the equipment to the exact location. As it gets closer, the lift starts rising so it is in the perfect position to automatically and accurately handle the product.”

Because the DC is new, A-H Distributors has no baseline with which to measure its ROI. But Jones is confident that the Mincron system will pay for itself quickly.

Bruce Supply Chooses Mincron's Warehouse Manager

For more than thirty years, Bruce Supply Corp., a distributor of plumbing, heating, electrical, PVF, drainage and specialty products, has been serving customers in New York City and the surrounding areas. Bruce Supply operates from four locations — two in Brooklyn, NY, one in Valley Stream, NY, and one in Keasbey, NJ.

In looking for a Warehouse Manager System application at their new distribution center in New Brunswick, NJ, Bruce Supply chose Mincron, and earlier this year went live with Mincron's StockSmart. Mincron’s 100% implementation success rate and flexible, scalable, integrated system were key attributes for adoption.

The StockSmart warehouse management system allows distributors to accurately and quickly ship orders while maintaining 99.9% inventory accuracy. It is designed to work equally well with small branch warehouses as well as massive distribution centers. The system automates warehouse workloads, minimizes disruptions and enables management to react and respond quickly to meet any of their customers’ special needs. Ardo Automates New Facilities With IBS

Ardo, a family-owned producer, packager and distributor of frozen vegetables, fruit, pasta and rice, recently merged with Dujardin Foods Group. As a result, Ardo operates 20 production, packing and distribution units in eight European countries, and employs more than 3,800 people. The company produces and sells in excess of 805,000 tons of food worldwide, with an estimated consolidated turnover of €815 million.

As a result of the merger, the company's warehouse management system (WMS) needed updating and automation. The primary objective would be to integrate with Ardo’s cold store refrigeration system, streamline business processes to facilitate accurate, on-time order fulfillment, and reduce ongoing manual labor and cost. IBS was selected and the implementation team worked closely with Ardo management to ensure a strict timeline was maintained through regular, ongoing communication and accurate level-setting. The IBS Dynaman system was integrated with Ardo’s ERP system, as well as the Savoye warehouse control system, Datapolis SCADA system, Transwide transportation planning and communication software, and Easyform document management system to ensure a cohesive, efficient operation.

As the project unfolded, specialized functional requirements were exposed, including specific schedulers for box picking and label requirements, among others. The IBS team customized solutions to accommodate these special cases and support seamless, end-to-end performance.

By summer of 2014, the IBS Dynaman solution was up and running. The newly installed WMS effectively verifies that the correct pallets are distributed to the correct trucks by optically verifying the labels on the pallets. The Dynaman system has reduced the number of distribution errors by eliminating much of the manual labor, where each worker had a unique way of doing things using Excel spreadsheets. Inconsistencies and errors have been reduced by more than 90 percent.

To read more about the IBS implementation at Ardo, as well as additional case studies and whitepapers, visit the IBS Newsroom.

Advanced Supply Chain and Warehouse Management Systems

Whether the warehouse is at the plant holding raw materials and parts, or dedicated to finished goods somewhere in the distribution chain, companies want to get the best usage of the space available and the people and equipment employed in the handling of the items stored.

A Warehouse Management System (WMS) is dedicated to those goals. Basic functions of WMS include directed put-away and picking, in conjunction with optimizing the use of space. Without computer assistance, goods are usually assigned to a specific location or at least segment of the warehouse. With computerized put-away (also called random location system), the computer can direct incoming goods to the ‘right’ location – one that makes the best use of space while placing the goods in the most convenient location for picking.

In addition to optimizing space and resources, WMS, working with and interfaced ERP system, can share the duties of inventory control including batch/lot traceability, and monitoring and enforcing shelf-life and first-in-first-out and other picking strategies. More advanced WMS functionality can develop and manage dock schedules, interfaces and directs automated material handling equipment including guided vehicles and carousels, and gathers detailed data on all warehouse activities for analysis and process improvement efforts.

To learn more about the Advanced Supply Chain WMS for manufacturers and distributors, and the features they can provide, visit the Advanced Supply Chain Software website.

ERP and WMS Work Together to Create Warehouse Flow

Every company has some kind of inventory management system (whether automated or manual) that keeps track of what’s on hand and where it is stored. Usually, this function is an integral part of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that also addresses production, procurement and sales – the activities that bring inventory into and out of the warehouse.

How to manage what’s in the warehouse and the warehouse resources themselves are quite another matter. Warehouse space and staff can be a significant expense and companies want to make the most of what they have. Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) address these concerns and should be integrated with ERP and distribution management systems to avoid redundancy and eliminate extra work and errors that result from duplication across systems.

The most obvious functions of WMS are put-away and picking – informing the material handlers where to put things and where to pick from. Equally important, however, is to locate items where picking can be most efficient – fast-moving items closer to the packing and loading area, items often ordered together close to each other to minimize travel for the pickers, and similar logic.

WMS also hosts reporting systems that both update its own records and pass the inventory transactions to ERP and other systems that need to know about inventory status. The masses of detailed information within the WMS support extensive reporting and analysis and form the basis for the optimization logic that drives the put-away and picking recommendations. Built-in Business Intelligence can provide management with valuable insight into warehouse operations, use of resources, and ways to make the best use of the warehouse and its personnel.

To read more about what WMS and ERP can do for your distribution or manufacturing business, visit the Advanced Supply Chain blog.

Activant Solutions Introduces Prophet 21 version 12.0

Enhanced User Interface Drawing Rave Reviews

Activant Solutions Inc. announces the availability of Activant® Prophet 21® software version 12.0.

"Before we began writing code for Prophet 21 version 12.0, we did an in-depth analysis of industry trends, including having extensive conversations with our customers, to determine what features to include," said Kevin Roach, executive vice president of Activant. "Our goal with this release of the Prophet 21 software is to help distributors increase efficiencies in their business, helping them through this recession so they will be positioned to take advantage of the opportunities expected to arise during the economic recovery."

Currently more than 1,500 distributors have invested in Prophet 21 software, making it a leading enterprise software solution for the distribution industry. Prophet 21 version 12.0 builds upon existing functionality and is designed to further assist distributors increase sales, improve customer service and reduce operating expenses. Among the many features in Prophet 21 version 12.0 is an enhanced user interface.

"There are a lot of great features in Prophet 21 version 12 that allow us to streamline our processes," said Michael Dean, IT Manger for Power & Pumps Inc. in Jacksonville, FL. "The search bar and my menu options improve our workflow and make it easier to move through the system."

Jennifer Buschmann, president of EA Buschmann Inc. in Lewiston, ME, agrees: "The updated user interface has a lot of potential for the user to customize screens to fit the individual user’s specific needs," she said. "The extended description view and field chooser features are two features we are extremely excited to have."

Many Valuable Features

In addition to the enhanced user interface, new customer relationship management (CRM) tools provide ready access to information, allowing users to streamline their day-to-day processes while improving customer service.

Attributes of the Prophet 21 software's production order and secondary processing functions have been combined into a labor tracking, job costing process that provides true light manufacturing capabilities. Distributors may assign technicians, track labor costs, and issue necessary material through a series of processes that manage the entire production process, whether the manufacturing stages are completed by the distributor or a third party.

The Wireless Warehouse Management Solution (WWMS) Workbench capability is designed as a tool for the warehouse manager/supervisor to dynamically manage the flow of transactions within their warehouse operation. The workbench is a dynamic list of transactions ready to pick that can be sorted, grouped and moved about in an ad hoc manner. Transactions at the top of the list can be quickly pushed to an available employee. Other warehouse tasks are also displayed and sorted by a user-defined hierarchy and can be pushed to the employee in the warehouse in accordance with that hierarchy. Also, the workbench feature has the capability of dynamically creating group pick tickets, providing a command and control tool for dynamic management of the warehouse picking workload, and providing the capability to push higher priority tasks to available “picking” employees while organizing and balancing usual pick loads. This feature increases the visibility of pickers' tasks, their progress, and their overall performance.

Further enhancing the international capabilities of the Prophet 21 software, Activant has added multi-lingual functionality which allows users to dynamically translate terms used throughout the application. This feature helps increase user productivity by enabling them to use the system in their native language.
