Trade Supply Group Sees Immediate ROI With SMP

Trade Supply Group (TSG), based in New York, focuses on the building products industry to both trade and retail consumers; the company is comprised of five different business units, each facing their own set of marketplace challenges.

Finding the ‘sweet spot’ between what the company needed collectively and each business unit needed individually was essential when identifying a sales management and CRM platform with which to partner.

With extensive experience in the sales management and CRM space, and working with ‘umbrella corporations’ comprised of multiple business units, SMP fit TSG's needs perfectly. TSG business System Administrator, Scott Sokoly, who managed the SMP implementation, said,“SMP was willing to work with us based or staff needs, and the incremental rollout was important to us instead of pushing everything ‘day one’.”

TSG Vice President of Operations, Nick Aversano added, “It really was easy; we saw no issues with data accuracy and almost no tweaks needed to make it all work.” In just a few short weeks, the implementation phase for Sales Management Plus was complete, and the team quickly moved on to training and rollout among the five business units. Said Aversano, “The phased rollout approach has helped to ensure a good first impression, and helped us make sure each team is getting what they need before we add on more. We think we have an idea of what the problem areas are that we need to resolve in each business entity, but we really want to listen to what they’re wasting time on, holes in their processes today, and so on, so we can then show them how to use SMP to answer those problems.” Sokoly added, “We focused on what’s important to the team first, then next, and next. Early success has helped up with easier buy-in as we add on more details and corporate requirements for SMP.”

As for their goals for SMP inside their organization? Aversano and Sokoly were quick to offer that SMP has become part of their corporate culture. TSG sees SMP as their one stop solution for bid follow-up, task tracking, sales analysis and managing the overall customer relationship. “We want everyone to see how it’s really working to improve our processes and business success,” Sokoly said. And Aversano followed, “we want to ensure it’s visible to everyone and we’re using it as our go-to to capture everything for all our bids and projects.”

eDist Deepens Customer Relationships With SMP

eDist is headquartered in Mahwah, New Jersey with locations scattered throughout the US and Canada to provide business and security solutions to companies in the healthcare, legal, insurance, public safety, field reporting, and corporate sales markets.

eDist uses SMP's Sales Management Plus and MarketPro2. Mike Whalen, executive vice president, is championing the use of SMP at eDist as the company implements new initiatives focused on a deeper customer relationship experience and targeted email marketing programs to deliver content relevant to their customers’ specific needs.

Before SMP, trying to pin the data down AND make it easy to compile and use was tedious at best. eDist tried different methods and software tools, but in the end, those weren’t handling their core needs, and created frustration all around. What their team really wanted was a single solution that allowed them to combine all the customer, contact and sales information so it was easy to analyze and act. Through SMP, the sales team began by profiling the customers they know best with a goal of really getting to know “who” their customers and contacts are on a deeper level so they can communicate about subject matter that’s most important to their customers’ business.

“The reps are using it so much more now that they’re able to see all the reporting capabilities and benefits based on the data they’ve entered into SMP.” says Mike Whalen, Executive Vice President.

Robertson Supply Gains Sales Insights With SMP

Robertson Supply is headquartered in Nampa, Idaho, and has nine locations throughout Idaho and Oregon. Robertson Supply is a 60-year old, family-owned plumbing and industrial supplier, with a business base that includes residential and commercial plumbing sales, domestic and industrial pump supplies, agricultural supplies, HVAC and appliances.

Mark Michels, Vice President of Operations and Byron Morgan, Vice President of Sales, shared that SMP enables them to quickly pivot based on market conditions, and make sound decisions about where to focus their time and energy to ensure organic growth across the company. And it’s paying dividends – the company is on track, targeting another year of double-digit growth.

Before SMP, Robertson had access to key information via their ERP but running queries for the salesforce was time-consuming, and could not always be completed in appropriate time to act upon the data discovered as a part of the query. Both Mark and Byron note that this is one of the things that made SMP so attractive to their team from the getgo. In the past, the two conceded, some opportunities simply passed them by because they could not identify the opportunity or quickly take action to capitalize on it. “We could not ID market shifts quickly – in the past it might take 8 months to a year for us to spot the trends – for specific customers or a product segment altogether,” Byron offered. “Now we can drill down and ID those patterns much more quickly and pinpoint all the way down to the geographical area and to the specific customer accounts and see exactly what was going on.”

They both point out that while SMP has helped them identify holes and sales opportunities throughout the business, it really also helps identify areas where they’re winning as well, and they use that as motivators for their team – congratulating sales teams, managers and sales reps for jobs well done. This is something in sales that often gets overlooked, but celebrating wins together can really play a large role in getting everyone engaged and taking ownership.

Sales Management Plus is a CRM and business intelligence application designed for wholesale distributors. SMP is a cloud-based application that integrates with an ERP application to leverage important information such as accounts, contacts, and historical transaction data.
